Wanting to kill a few hours in Bangkok before catching a flight out, I decided to take a tuk-tuk to China Town. To tell the truth I was appalled at the number of restaurants advertising shark fin soup. In the few streets I wandered I must have come across a dozen restaurants at least, most of them proudly displaying dried fins in their windows.
I’m not ignorant, I know it’s a big cultural thing for the Chinese, and that it’s pretty much considered an essential part of the menu at weddings and so on. I’m also well aware that serving your guests shark fin soup is a sign of wealth, and that the percentage of people able and willing to do so is increasing at an alarming rate, thanks to the growing - nay, exploding middle class of China.
Having said that, would someone please give me a panda burger? What’s that - I can’t have one, because it’s an endangered species.
well so are many species of sharks, for God’s sake! - they just aren’t cuddly and sneeze on youtube!
Phew... Okay rant over.
